- What Does a Typical Workday Look Like for a Dentist in the Netherlands?
Curious what working as a dentist in the Netherlands really looks like?
We often get this question from EU-trained dentists thinking about relocating. In this blog, we walk you through what a typical Dutch workday involves — from start times to teamwork, patients, and the work-life balance that surprises many professionals.
🕘 A Clear Daily Structure
Most dentists in the Netherlands work between 32 and 36 hours per week. A typical workday starts around 8:00 or 8:30 AM and ends by 5:00 PM, with a short lunch break around noon. Evening or weekend shifts are uncommon – unless you're working in an emergency clinic.
Your schedule is planned digitally and in advance, offering a clear overview of your day and reducing stress.
“Many of the dentists we support are surprised by how well everything is organized here,” says Gerwin, our Dental Account Manager.
👥 Teamwork in a Flat Hierarchy
Dentists in the Netherlands work closely with dental assistants, oral hygienists, and practice managers. The atmosphere is professional, yet informal. Dutch clinics are known for their flat hierarchy – where open communication and collaboration are key.
You’re not expected to do everything alone. Instead, you’re part of a supportive team.
🔄 Patients and Treatments
Expect to treat a wide range of patients – from children to elderly – with a strong focus on prevention and patient education. Most appointments take 20 to 40 minutes, depending on the treatment.
Clinics are equipped with modern tools, like intraoral scanners and digital X-rays, allowing you to focus more on quality care and less on paperwork.
📋 Efficient Administration
Yes, some administration is involved – but Dutch clinics use digital systems that keep things efficient. You’ll write concise patient notes, communicate with colleagues, and sometimes contact specialists or insurance companies.
This is why Dutch language skills are important. They help ensure safe communication with patients and clear documentation.
⚖️ Work-Life Balance
One of the biggest reasons international dentists choose the Netherlands is the excellent work-life balance. With a structured workweek and limited overtime, there’s time left for family, hobbies, or continued education.
Many of the dentists we’ve supported tell us that they finally have a rhythm that allows them to enjoy their personal life – without giving up professional ambition.
🇷🇴 A Real-Life Example
Dr. Ana from Romania, one of the dentists we placed, works four days a week at a modern clinic near Utrecht. Her days are filled with preventive care, check-ups, and occasional restorative treatments. By 5 PM, she’s off – often to her Dutch class or out for a walk with friends.
“Everything is so well-planned and calm compared to what I was used to,” she told us.
